On the 29th October 2014, Sons Of Kemet return to stage for an extra special London show at XOYO. Their last show was a sell out and received rave reviews all round, with descriptions such as ‘Highly Exhilarating’ and ‘unmissable’. Their bewitching blend of polyrhythms and potent melodic edge create an ecstatic energy that is not to be ignored!
Sons Of Kemet, a new Soundcrash favourite, are a MOBO Jazz award winning outfit led by Saxophonist, Clarinettist, composer and ‘BBC New Generation Artist’ Shabaka Hutchings. And it doesn’t stop there, the credentials that this group have accumulated is astonishing; Oren Marshall (Moondog, Radiohead) on tuba and both Seb Rochford (Polar Bear, Babyshambles) and Tom Skinner (Zero 7, Eska) on drums. Hypnotic double drum rhythms frame the colourful interplay of saxophone, clarinet and tuba as the original compositions are brought to life by four fiercely creative musicians.
Sessions on BBC Radio 3’s Jazz On 3 and at Maida Vale Studios for BBC Radio 2, a collaboration with the BBC Concert Orchestra at the London Jazz Festival and appearances at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Cheltenham Jazz Festival, The Barbican and Ronnie Scott’s have catapulted the band into the limelight. Their debut album ‘Burn’ (Naim Records) was one of the truly standout releases of 2013 but Sons of Kemet are a band that really must be experienced live.
