Bobby Womack passed today at age 70 of undisclosed causes. The singer-songwriter had been sick with various illnesses but managed to tour this year. Womack started his career as member of The Valentinos with his brothers in the ’60’s. In the later part of the decade he worked as a songwriter and session musician for people like Aretha Franklin and Sly Stone. He branched out and started pursuing his goals as a solo artist in the ’70’s. “If You Think You’re Lonely Now,” “Woman’s Gotta Have It and “Across 110th Street” became signature songs that distinguished him as a superb soul artist. Womack reached a new generation of fans in the 2000’s as a featured artist on two of Damon Albarn’s Gorillaz projects.
