Pharoah Sanders – The Creator Has A Master Plan from Funk Drops on Vimeo.
Pharoah Sanders established himself as a free-jazz leader in the ’60’s after working with Sun Ra, Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane. His 1969 Karma album is always cited for the spiritually-influenced “The Creator Has A Master Plan” 3-part suite. The recordings he made in ’60’s and ’70’s were noted for his radical style that utilized tonal schemes, screeching and structures that went against the rules of traditional swing jazz. “Astral Traveling,” “Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt” and “Hum-Allah-Hum-Allah-Hum Allah” are the tip of his pure musical intuition aided and co-signed by Cecil Taylor, Sonny Sharrock and Albert Ayler. In 1977 he delved into commercial R&B with the album Love Will Find A Way that found him working with Phyllis Hyman, Lenny White and Norman Connors. Sanders made several albums in the ’80s’ that focused on spiritual ideas again and in ’94 he appeared on Stolen Moments: Red, Hot + Cool. Sanders started regularly performing at international jazz festivals after appearing at the 2007 Melbourne Jazz Festival.
