Throwback: De La Soul-Potholes In My Lawn
De La Soul’s 3 Feet High & Rising got them quickly labeled as the first hippies in rap because of their singular boho aesthetic that was unlike anyone else’s in their Native Tongue posse. They were kids of P-Funk who brought their leader George Clinton back into the forefront with their sample of “(Not Just) Knee Deep” inside “Me, Myself & I.” “Eye Know,” “Say No Go” and “Buddy” opened-up the leftfield in rap and the album was the start of a three-project run with Prince Paul. “Potholes In My Lawn” was a creative way for Posdnuos, Dave and Maseo to complain about rappers biting their style. The song’s video was different for the time because of the vintage black and white film look. The remix of “Buddy” was a full display of the Native Tongue Family and helped introduce Q-Tip to the public before the emergence of A Tribe Called Quest. In 2004 “Potholes In My Lawn” became the first rap song played on the planet Mars by NASA’s Opportunity Rover. De La Soul’s 7 album catalog spans the Golden Era with their most recent album being last year’s Plug 1 & Plug 2 Present… First Serve. They released “Get Away Ft. Spirit Of The Wu” in the spring as part of a mission to released one song per month for the rest of the year.
