P.M. Dawn consisted of Jersey City, New Jersey brothers Attrell Cordes (Prince Be) and Jarrett Cordes (J.C. The Eternal). “Ode To A Forgetful Mind” was their first single released in 1989. The song did not do well in the United States but became successful overseas. Gee Street Records, who released the song and starting recording their first album, was sold to Island. Island released their debut album Of the Heart, of the Soul and of the Cross: The Utopian Experience in 1991. “Set Adrift On Memory Bliss” was the single that gave them international commercial success and became the first single to hit number one after the introduction of Nielsen SoundScan. “Paper Doll” was the follow-up single and “In The Presence of Mirrors” is from this album as well.“Reality Used To Be A Friend Of Mine” was another song from this set that established them as the true R&B hippies of rap. It was during this time that Prince Be gave his famous interview with Details magazine stating that “KRS-One wants to be a teacher, but a teacher of what?” The Blastermaster and crew responded by storming the stage of a P.M. Dawn show at the Sound Factory in New York City and threw them off to perform “I’m Still No. 1.” The Bliss Album came out in 1993 and “I’d Die Without You” appeared in the Eddie Murphy movie “Boomerang.” “Looking Through Patient Eyes,” “More Than Likely” and “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)” were also on this album that was considered their definitive work. Jesus Wept was their third offering and it was released in 1995. “Downtown Venus” was the highest charting single but overall this project did not have the same success as the first two albums. They suffered a major setback to their image in 1995 when J.C. was arrested for sexually assaulting his cousin. By 1998 a new album, Dearest Christian, I’m So Very Sorry for Bringing You Here. Love, Dad was released. “Being So Not For You (I Had No Right)” was a minor hit single but Prince Be managed to contribute the songs “Perfect for You” and “Gotta Be…Movin’ on Up” to the soundtrack for “Senseless” that year as well. Their last studio album was 2000’s F*cked Music available only via mail order. In 2005 The Doc Of The Dawn-Doc.G was introduced into the group because Prince Be had a stroke. The Doc now tours as P.M. Dawn and promotes his solo material. A P.M. Dawn greatest hits compilation came out in 2010.
