Machine was a disco styled studio band from New York that August Darnell formed in 1977. Singer Clare Bathé, guitarist Jay Stovall, bassist Melvin Lee, keyboardist Kevin Nance, and drummer Lonnie Ferguson wanted to make music with a social message like the soul music of the early ’70’s.”There But For The Grace of God Go I” written by Darnell, was on their 1979 RCA debut. The song was a cult/club hit and became their claim to fame. Moving On was their second and last release for RCA in 1980 and the group dissolved by 1981. Darnell would go on to create Kid Creole and The Coconuts and they would cover “There But For The Grace of God Go I” in 1980.
