Heavy D at the 2011 BET Awards
TMZ has reported the passing of Heavy D earlier today without anymore details. Before Biggie Smalls made big men look fashionable and called himself “The Black Frank White” there was Heavy D, the self-described “Overweight Lover.” Andre Harrell recognized him as a sex symbol and a star before anyone else in the industry and it was Heavy D that introduced Sean Combs to Harrell for the internship that launched his career. His style was heavily influenced by his Jamaican roots that added the tongue-twisting “diddly dees” to a song like “We Got Our Own Thing” and found him recently recording reggae-styled music. His first 5 albums are classics of hip-hop’s Golden Era and he also was an actor. He appeared in the critically acclaimed Laurence Fishburne play Riff Raff and made a number of film and Tv appearances including “Life” and “A Different World.” Pete Rock & C. L. Smooth will now have to dedicate “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.) to Heavy D.
