“Rumble In The Jungle” is from the “When We Were Kings” documentary directed by Leon Gast in 1996. The song comes from the title of the 1974 heavyweight championship fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman that took place in Zaire. Gast’s film is about the match, the music and the controversial financial backing from Zairian dictator Mobutu Sese Suko. There was a three-day music festival that accompanied the fight called Zaire 74. African-American performers including James Brown, Bill Withers, B.B. King, and others shared the stage with several South Africa entertainers and the concert became another documentary called “Soul Power.” “When Were Kings” incorporated some of the footage from the festival with new music. The combination of The Fugees with A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes and John Forte on a song was historic in itself. The film won an Academy Award For Best Documentary Feature and Ali won the fight.
