A.Dd+, the Dallas duo comprised of rappers Slim Gravy and Paris Pershun, is excited to release the second single from their upcoming album, When Pigs Fly. The album, produced by Picnic Tyme, who is also a member of Erykah Badu’s Cannabinoids, will be released as a free download on March 28th, and as a teaser in the final weeks before the release this short but sweet single says a lot in two minutes. “Slow Tempo” creates a sedated atmosphere with menacing synthesizers, hypnotizing pads, and an ever so slightly behind the beat drum break, all of which compliment a stuttering bass line and flutters of synth stabs that play off of each other as the song builds and breaks down. Atop Picnic’s instrumental, Slim’s crooned vocals are complimented by Paris’ verse, as the echo on their voices melts into the layering of synth chords.
For a song that starts “We live fast and die young/ Get cash to buy drugs,” it’s not a surprise to hear that the song was inspired by Slim’s addictions. “No matter how bad I know something is,” he says, “I’m stuck to it.” But really, the song is about more than Slim’s personal vices. “The song is about struggles and how we deal with them,” says Paris, whose own verse was inspired by the loss of his grandmother to cancer and twins to a miscarriage. “Life is temporary,” says the duo, echoing the sentiment in song, saying, “Get off the gas, ‘fore you wreck that rental, and crash/ Slow tempo, slow tempo.”
