Burnt Sugar- Indomitable: James Brown The Music and The Man

Last week Greg Tate’s Burnt Sugar performed Indomitable: James Brown The Man and His Music at Le Poisson Rouge in New York City. Check out Shelley Nicole’s “Bring It Up” and “Hot Pants.” Lisala Beatty also does a great job on “I Don’t Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing (Open Up The Door, I’ll Get It Myself.)” Brandon Victor Dixon stars as James Brown and Patricia McGregor is the director. The show sold-out two nights in Harlem at the Apollo Theater. The piece celebrates Brown and also uses Christie’s auction of Brown’s life as inspiration. Indomitable is giving dignity to Brown on the highest order as he becomes an ancestor despite the Americana undervaluing of his contributions. Brown would’ve yelled at Burnt Sugar for not having every member dress uniformly like the Famous Flames or The JB’s but he would’ve enjoyed the musicianship and felt the love.
