Candi Staton started her career singing with The Jewel Gospel Trio as a teenager. The group toured with The Soul Stirrers, C.L. Franklin and Mahalia Jackson. In 1968 she began a solo career after Clarence Carter introduced her to Rick Hall who got her a deal with Capitol Records. “I’d Rather Be An Old Man’s Sweetheart (Than A Young One’s Fool)” was her first million selling song and she would garner 16 R&B hits while working in Hall’s FAME studios. Her version of Tammy Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man” and a cover of “In The Ghetto” went gold and received Grammy nominations. In the ’70s she moved to Warner Brothers and recorded a number of disco classics with the help of David Crawford. “As Long As He Takes Care Of Home,” “A Little Taste Of Love,” “Run To Me” and “Victim” made her a dancefloor diva raised her profile to the highest it had ever been. “When You Wake Up Tomorrow” comes from her 1979 album Chance. The song was co-written by dance giant Patrick Adams with Kenneth Morris and Peter Patrick. Luther Vandross, Change and Janet Jackson all collaborated with Staton on “When You Wake Up Tomorrow” and the title track from the album. During that same year President Jimmy Carter invited her, Patti LaBelle, Chuck Berry, Joe Williams and Andrae Crouch to the White House to inaugurate the first Black Music Month concert on the White House lawn. She did a cover of Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds” that did well on the UK charts in 1982 and that was also the year she returned to gospel music. A prolific amount of gospel albums were released by her and she founded a ministry with her husband. However in 1991 her voice was sampled on the British club hit “You Got The Love” by The Source. In 2007 she was inducted into the Christian Hall Of Fame. Her most current release is 2009’s Who’s Hurting Now.
