Abbey Lincoln who once sported a dress previously worn by Marilyn Monroe in The Girl Can’t Help It died yesterday in Manhattan at age 80. Ms. Lincoln sang on and helped shape We Insist!- Freedom Now Suite with ex-husband Max Roach in 1960 and found her ultimate inspiration in the civil rights movement. Her 1964 appearance in Nothing But A Man was another tribute to the contentious lives of African-Americans battling racism. In 1990 Spike Lee cast her as the mother of Denzel Washington’s lead character in Mo’ Better Blues. She recorded 25 albums with Abbey Sings Abbey from 2007 being her last one.
