Phelps “Catfish” Collins, an original member of James Brown’s The JB’s passed of cancer on August 6th. Collins’ significance in the music has always been overshadowed by the flamboyance and fame of his younger brother Bootsy Collins. But it was both of their talents that Brown discovered in 1969 when he stopped through their hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio and heard them playing in their band The Pacemakers. The brothers would leave Brown’s band by 1971 and join Parliament Funkadelic. Philippe Wynne, who would also join P-Funk later was a member of The Pacemakers too. Phelps would eventually join his brother’s group Bootsy’s Rubber Band. Cancer is killing the funk because Gary Shider died from the same disease one month ago.
