Gene Harris was a pianist from Benton Harbor, MI who fused soul and jazz together and spent four years working as part of The Three Sounds. The trio was comprised of Harris, Andy Simpkins and Bill Dowdy recorded for Blue Note and Verve Records. “Losalamitoslatinfunksong” comes from his 1974 album Astral Signal and it is considered a funk jazz classic that has been remixed by people like the West London broken beat collective Bugz In The Attic. Harris retired in 1977 and relocated to Boise, Idahobut started working again at the urging of famed jazz bassist Ray Brown. He lead the Phillip Morris Superband for a time and recorded for Concord. Although he passed in 2000 there have been three posthumous releases and his legacy is still celebrated by The Boise State Department Of Music with an upcoming 13th annual Gene Harris Jazz Festival in 2010.
