Nina Simone was notorious for her views about about American racism. She once told an interviewer on record that Michael Jackson’s problems were the results him being under Quincy Jone’s tutelage. Her legendary song “Mississippi Goddamn” was written in response to the murder of Medgar Evers and “Four Women” attacked the stereotyping of Black women. A concert trained pianist she was forever perturbed about being classified as a jazz artist because in the ’50’s and ’60’s jazz didn’t have the pedigree it has now. Because her music was so overt in its message you can not separate Simone the artist from Simone the outspoken social critic and this is why the documentary that comes out on itunes
on the 24th is necessary for all of her fans.
