Skyy was the end result of Solomon Roberts Jr.’s dealings with Randy Muller in Muller’s band Brass Construction. The former had a basement studio in Brooklyn where Muller went to record his band formerly named Dynamic Soul. Roberts recorded the band and also sang back-up for them. Muller became successful with Brass Construction and also did string arrangements for BT Express another band that had played in Robert’s basement. By the late ’70’s Roberts formed his own band named Fuel but the named was later changed to Skyy. Muller and Roberts were still working together musically with Muller writing the songs while Roberts did the production. Their first hit song “First Time Around” from ’79 was a funky disco excursion that lead the way for other topnotch audio like “High,” “Let’s Celebrate,” “Skyzoo” “Real Love” and “Call Me.” “Start Of A Romance” was one of the biggest R&B songs of ’89 providing competition for people like De La Soul, Jody Watley and Soul II Soul which was impressive for a band of its age and furthered the significance of Muller’s keen understanding for
dancefloor politics.
