Los Angeles, CA (September 23, 2008) – Aiming to shatter the male/reggae/Rasta stereotype that American audiences might have of Jamaican artists, Kingston-raised performer Tami Chynn welcomes the release of her first US major-label single, “Frozen†(available at iTunes) followed by her SRC/Universal Records album, Primadonna, releasing Spring 2009. Fun and breezy on its surface, her music is an innovative stew of dancehall, pop, hip-hop, electronica and other ingredients, representing a new hybrid sound that showcases the Caribbean island’s evolving musical culture. “Frozen†debuted at #42 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart and at #24 on the Hot Dance Radio Airplay chart.
Recorded in Los Angeles and the Atlanta studio of Grammy®-nominated producer Akon, Primadonna is infused with the platinum RedOne/Konvict sound, a pulsing and sometimes hypnotic beat that provides the perfect conduit for Chynn’s empowering, sexy, and at times sentimental lyrics. “Frozen,†featuring Akon, croons “Baby, you know I’m stuck on your love,†while other up-tempo songs like “We Don’t Mess†offer an unapologetic girl’s anthem. From the trance-like “Hypnotico†to the dancehall edge of “Watch Me Wine,†Tami keeps the energy high. The album is balanced by tracks such as the reflective, mid-tempo “Killa Love Song†and “This Must Be Love,†with Tami slowing it down to demonstrate her vocal range and channel her inner Sade.
Chynn emerged from one of the grittiest, male-dominated music scenes, Jamaica ’s dancehall, recognized as a talented female artist whose hot sound was rivaled by her even hotter look. Collaborating with such seminal local artists such as Beenie Man, Sean Paul (she appeared on “All on Me†from 2005’s Trinity) and Lady Saw, her underground hits such as “Over and Over Again,†“Tell Me Seh†and “Show Me Now†led to the release of her first album in Japan, Out of Many…One (Universal/Cherry), led by the single “Hyperventilating.â€
Tami can also be seen in the current Pepsi commercial spot, along with Tpain and Shaggy, featuring her cover version of “Kung Fu Fighting†produced by Akon.
