Neneh Cherry Releases Visual For Natural Skin Deep

Neneh Cherry’s video for “Natural Skin Deep” moves quickly with multiple scenarios directed by Crack Stevens. He explains,

“We filmed the video with a large and beautiful cast in Beirut, Lebanon. Much of my work is community-centric, be it global or local community. It’s important that we all see ourselves reflected in art. Equally, it’s about whether our relationship with materialism is making us more apathetic to what’s going on around us? Neneh being this global icon and the name of the album being called Broken Politics lent itself to having more intent within the various themes. There is a lot going on in video truth be told, I went to see Neneh play at Village Underground and everyone whipped out their phones to film her, so much so I got asked by this guy to move because I was in the way of his phone. Seemed quite ironic that the world is right here in front of us, really 360-degree drama. Instead of communicating through screens maybe we’re all consuming it through screens.”

Cherry’s song about colonization is one statement among many from her current album Broken Politics. The people in the video aggressively focus their phones on Cherry instead of the world they live in every day. But Cherry never stops dancing and interacting with the people as her lyrics level pay tribute to the Great Sioux Nation that had their land taken by the United States because of the gold presence.

Neneh Cherry: Broken Politics Album Stream

Neneh Cherry’s Broken Politics is her fifth album and the title is an honest description of the music’s focus. She previewed the material with the singles “Kong” and “Shot Gun Shack” that addressed the refugee crisis in Europe and gun violence. Four Tet produced the album that is far away from Cherry’s “Buffalo Stance” days in its moody expanse of sturdy pop. Cherry has a few tour dates in the United States during November and next year she will travel and perform in Europe.

Neneh Cherry Unveils Shot Gun Shack & Title Of New Album

Neneh Cherry’s “Shot Gun Shack” is titled after a phrase she heard at the funeral for jazz legend Ornette Coleman. The lyrics investigate global gun violence and the power of guns in society. Shotgun houses were the most popular style of home in the south during the end of the Civil War moving into the 1920s. Cherry has revealed her new album is called Broken Politics she says,

“I’m very shy about taking on big themes with the airs that I’ve got a solution—who has the fucking solutions? I like writing from a personal perspective, and the time we live in is so much about finding your own voice. People have been left feeling misheard, misunderstood, and disillusioned. What the fuck can I do? Maybe politics starts in your bedroom, or your house—a form of activism, and a responsibility. The album is about all of those things: feeling broken, disappointed, and sad, but having perseverance. It’s a fight against the extinction of free thought and spirit.”

Neneh Cherry returns after a four-year hiatus with a video for her new single “Kongo.” Directed by Jenn Nkiru, various families are captured in still moments and Cherry is filmed looking straight into the camera and later wearing all white. “Kongo” is about Europe’s refugee problems and their history of colonialism. Four Tet and 3D of Massive Attack produced “Kong” which, so far, is not indicated in a full-length album. The “Buffalo Stance” singer has three upcoming shows in Stockholm, London and Paris.
