Betty Davis Documentary Betty – They Say I’m Different Has A Trailer

Betty – They Say I’m Different is a documentary about Betty Davis the funk singer who was briefly married to Miles Davis. Director Phil Cox had the rare chance to spend time with Davis over the past four years and direct this film about her life. Betty Mabry was a fixture on the music scene in the ’60s and made friends with Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone. She had style and attracted the attention of Miles Davis who she married and helped steer his music into the next phase of his career. Betty Davis released four albums as a solo artist and was boycotted by the NAACP because of her provocative music and image. She disappeared from the media in the ’80s’ and the film is the first time she has addressed the public since she chose to live a quiet life. Betty – They Say I’m Different will premiere at the IDFA film festival in Amsterdam this month. U.S. distribution of the film is scheduled to take place in 2018.

Miles & Betty Davis Unreleased Demo Session Released For The First Time

Betty Davis’s brief marriage to Miles Davis led him towards the embracing of new sounds in the ’60’s. The former Betty Mabry introduced Davis to the music of Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone which was the precursor to his explorations in fusion with Bitches Brew. Before she recorded her groundbreaking funk solo albums and he started crafting his new sound, they recorded some demos for Columbia. Mitch Mitchell, who was the drummer for The Jimi Hendrix Experience and saxophonist Wayne Shorter are some of the people who played on the session. The recording has now been released as Betty Davis The Columbia Years: 1968-1969 and it has been remastered and has  rare photos and interviews.

Nasty Gal: The Many Lives Of Funk Queen Betty Davis

Betty Mabry Davis was briefly married to Miles Davis in the late ’60’s for about 1 year. She is responsible for exposing Davis to Jimi Hendrix, Sly & The Family Stone and helping him develop a more modern look and image. He wrote a song about her for his Filles de Kilimanjaro album and her face is on the cover. In the ’70’s Betty branched out after the ending of her marriage to Miles and made 4 records of raw funk with an image that pre-dates the raunchiness of Millie Jackson and the freedom of Madonna. Directors Phil Cox and Damon Smith contacted Betty Davis a few years ago and received her blessing to make Nasty Gal: The Many Lives Of Funk Queen Betty Davis as an independent venture. They have launched an indiegogo campaign to raise money for the film and they are 57 days left to meet their 65,000 goal. Donate to the campaign here.
