Throwback: Macy Gray-I Try

Macy Gray’s “I Try” took her unique raspy voice to the world. The second single from her debut album On How Life Is introduced Gray as a quirky new pop star. She sang about pining for a lover with a fearless vulnerability that quickly endeared her to a critical mass of pop lovers. “I Try” first appeared in the movies Love Jones and Picture Perfect but two years later in 1999 it became one of the biggest songs around the globe. Gray created her own lane with a sound heavily influenced by jazz, R&B and blues. “I Try” won a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1999 and was nominated for song and record of the year. Her signature song kicked off a career that produced 10 studio albums and acting roles in movies like Training Day. In 2019, Gray went back on the road to promote her most recent album Ruby (2018.)
