Throwback: India.Arie-Brown Skin

India.Arie’s “Brown Skin” was her second major stance on self-love after her debut single, “Video.” The affirmation of darker-skinned people starting with her looking into the mirror was a standout song in 2001. Arie, Mark Batson and Shannon Sanders wrote “Brown Skin” to negate a singular idea about beauty. The message was wrapped in a slow romantic arrangement and Arie’s lyrics about pleasing the senses. “Brown Skin” fell in line with Aries’s positive self-awareness theme on her debut album Acoustic Soul. All of the songs were about unconditional love, anti-racism, self-actualization and romance. “Brown Skin” became one of her signature songs and an anthem for a lot of little girls and people in general who felt ostracized for their appearance. India.Arie’s bohemian style,  natural hair aesthetic and soothing voice and guitar broke through to the mainstream with the success of Acoustic Soul. She proved to have the rare talent to make catchy songs with substance. India.Arie is still on her musical journey in 2018 with her single “That Magic” on the way to the release of her eighth studio album Worthy.
