Throwback: Graham Central Station-The Jam

Graham Central Station’s Ain’t No ‘Bout-A-Doubt was their third album and it went gold and produced their number one soul hit “Your Love.” Funk connoisseurs usually remember this album for “The Jam.” The almost 10-minute session of the band’s searing organ leading into everyone’s individual solos created one of the Graham Central Station’s perennial party records. Larry Graham’s childhood in a musical family and his previous life as a member of Sly & The Family Stone more than prepared him for the leadership of his own band. The slap-bass pioneer formed Graham Central Station in 1973 from the members of the band Azteca led by Neal Schon before he left to start the band Journey. Graham recorded 10 studio albums and three live recordings with them and still had a solo career in the ’80s most remembered for his song “One In A Million.” Larry Graham performed “The Jam” for Prince’s Rave Un2 The Joy 2000 concert and Graham Central Station opened for Prince on his 2011 Welcome 2 America Tour. Graham and his band still tour regularly and some millennials have come to know him because he is Drake’s uncle.
