Missy Elliott is on the cover of the June issue of Elle magazine and she talks about fulfilling her dreams of stardom, her creative process and the innovative moment when she wore a trash bag in her video for “The Rain.” She gave a deeper explanation for the look:
“The outfit was a way to mask my shyness behind all the chaos of the look. Although I am shy, I was never afraid to be a provocative woman. The outfit was a symbol of power. I loved the idea of feeling like a hip-hop Michelin woman. I knew I could have on a blow-up suit and still have people talking. It was bold and different. I’ve always seen myself as an innovator and a creative unlike any other.”
Elliott’s legacy is examined in the article even though she is still creating it. Earlier this year she released the single “I’m Better” and the futuristic video followed soon after. The Elle profile examines her pop genius and reflects the anticipation fans have for her next project. After her 2015 Super Bowl performance, she developed a whole new younger fanbase who believed she was a new artist. As a queen of rap Missy Elliott is expected to have huge success in 2017 when her new album drops. But right now she can be heard on Mary J. Blige’s Strength Of A Woman album. She also mentions in the feature how she dealt with the music industry’s initial resistance to her physical appearance by focusing on songwriting before she became a solo artist. The June issue of Elle is on newsstands now.
