Pharrell Performs Runnin’ On The Ellen Show

Pharrell was on the Ellen show yesterday to promote the movie Hidden Figures and he also addressed the Kim Burrell controversy. Burrell’s sermon about “perverted homosexuals” went viral last week and since then she was uninvited to Ellen, her radio was canceled and she was nixed from appearing at the Trailblazers Of Gospel Music Awards. Pharrell had already denounced Burrell’s views on his Twitter timeline and he reiterated those thoughts on Ellen. “Runnin'” is one of the songs he composed for the Hidden Figures soundtrack and he performed it live on the show.

Courtney Pine Signs To Freestyle Records

British jazz saxophonist Courtney Pine has signed to Freestyle Records in London for his next album Black Notes From The Deep. The multi-instrumentalist is playing tenor sax on the mostly acoustic project which will have vocals from labelmate Omar. Pine has released almost 20 albums in his 30-year career. He states, “This is my first release with Freestyle and I feel fortunate to be involved with a company that thinks with modern progressive thoughts  and approaches the ever increasing jazz fan base with an open mind, presenting music with good intentions, heart, spirit and unity.” Black Notes From The Deep will come out in the spring and Pine and Omar will tour the new music throughout the year. Pine’s horn came into the pop world when he appeared on Soul II Soul’s Volume II album.

Fokis-History (Thanks Obama) Feat. Deemi & Olu Dara Official Video

Fokis pays tribute to the 44th president with a video for “History (Thanks Obama).” Nas’ father Olu Dara fills a few shots with his soft trumpet playing as various clips of Obama flash by and give a quick chronicle of his presidency. Dahoud Darien known for his previous work for Big Pun and Jay-Z produced the song. Fokis explains,  “It’s only right that we send Obama off the right way.”

Fantastic Negrito brought his 21st-century blues to Jimmy Kimmel Live! and performed “Lost In A Crowd” for the studio audience. The Bay Area native released The Last Days Of Oakland in 2016.

Quelle Chris: Calm Before Feat. Cavalier & Suzi Analog Official Video

Quelle Chris just released the video for “Calm Before” which has vocals from Cavalier and Suzi Analogue. The Detroit rapper’s next album, Being You Is Great, I Wish I Could Be You More Often comes out February 10th. Chris has company from Cavalier, an iguana and a snake in the clip directed by Tammy Mercure. Homeboy Sandman, Elzhi, Jean Grae and more have guest appearances on the new album.
