Afropunk Announces Atlanta Festival: Carnival Of Consciousness


Today Afropunk announced their Carnival of Consciousness taking place in Atlanta October 14-16 at 787 Windsor. The event is described as “a festival of contemporary black expression and youthful black consciousness.”   The Fancy Dress Ball will start the festival with a Jou’vert style celebration for the Afropunk Global Initiative. J’ouvert overnight street carnivals started 200 years ago in the Caribbean as a way to celebrate the emancipation of the slaves in 1838. The Afropunk Global Initiative will present a series of lectures and panels called Social Salons lead by a variety of innovators including cultural critic Michaela Angela Davis. Tyler The Creator, Sza, Saul Williams and Lion Babe are among the lineup. Tickets are on sale at the Afropunk site.

Tall Black Guy-Come With Me And Fly Featuring Yusef Rumperfield

Tall Black Guy is finally following up his brilliant 8 Miles From Moenart released in 2013 with the forthcoming Let’s Take A Trip.  “Come With Me And Fly” featuring Yusef Rumperfield is from the new album and it’s a funky cosmic stuttering of beats pierced by contained screams. According to Gilles Peterson, Let’s Take A Trip will be released on First Word Records just like TBG’s previous release.


Living Colour-Who Shot Ya Official Video

Living Colour delivers a straightforward video for their interpretation of Biggie Smalls’s “Who Shot Ya.” The band plays for the camera as the names and photos of gun violence victims flash on the screen. The images of police officers and statistics for gun-related deaths are also part of the presentation. Who Shot Ya, the album, is out now.
