Kurtis Blow Talks To VladTV About Prince Supporting King Holiday Single

Kurtis Blow talks to VladTV about Dexter King asking him to create a song for his father Martin Luther King Jr. and how Prince paid $90,000 to create the video. El DeBarge, Whitney Houston, Stacy Lattisaw, New Edition and Stephanie Mills were some of the artists to appear on “King Holiday.” The song was a celebration of the actual King holiday that started January 20, 1986. Prince did not have any creative input on the song but had respect for King’s work.

Throwback: George Clinton Parliament Funkadelic-Erotic City

PCUSoundtrack

George Clinton and his combined Parliament-Funkadelic band covered Prince’s “Erotic City” for the PCU soundtrack. The movie was a forgettable comedy about college life but Clinton’s Prince cover was worth the cost of the soundtrack. The irony of the song is the fact that Prince wrote it after seeing Clinton perform at the Beverly Theater in Los Angeles in 1983, something he shared when he inducted Parliament-Funkadelic into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Clinton’s version was a straightforward cover with a few lyric changes, ┬áthe distinct vocals of Belita Wood and an additional chorus.
