“I Wanna Sex You Up” introduced Color Me Badd to the world in 1991. The group included Bryan Abrams, Mark Calderone, Sam Watters and Kevin Thornton all from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The combination of Shuggie Otis’s “Strawberry Letter 23” the bassline from Betty Wright’s “Tonight Is The Night” and Dougie E. Fresh’s “La Di Da Di” created the perfect bed of classic references for the group to sing over. The single made them an internationally recognized R&B group, earned them a Soul Train Award for Best R&B/Soul single and helped their debut album, C.M.B. sell 3 million copies. The song did well commercially but over time became more famous for its appearance in the movie New Jack City. Color Me Badd were the only interracial New Jack Swing era boy band and they were fully accepted by R&B fans. They also had success with the singles “I Adore Mi Amor,” “All 4 Love” “Thinkin’ Back” and “Slow Motion.” They disbanded in 1998 after 4 albums but reunited in 2010 as a twosome featuring Bryan Abrams and Mark Calderone. In 2015 3 members minus Sam Watters got back together for a tour of Singapore.
