Throwback: The Family-Screams Of Passion

The Family was band put together by Prince in the ’80’s right after he recorded Around The World In A Day. He assembled Jerome Benton, Jellybean Johnson, Susannah Melvoin, St. Paul Petersen and Eric Leeds as the band’s lineup. The group was essentially his mouthpiece because he wrote and recorded all the music except, “River Run Dry” and later added vocals from Petersen and Melvoin. “Screams Of Passion” would be the only single and video from the 8-song album. “Nothing Compares 2 U” was written by Prince for then-fiancee Susannah and later became a big song for Sinead O’Connor. Spike Lee would also use the song for the Girl 6 soundtrack. The Family differed from Prince’s earlier work as the mastermind behind The Time because of the jazzy instrumentals, its co-ed nature and Petersen’s low-key presence in contrast to Morris Day’s theatrics. The band existed for the one album and then broke-up soon after their 1985 introduction. They re-formed in 2009 as fDeluxe minus Jerome Benton and are preparing for the release of their fourth album, A M Static on October 18th.
