Fruitvale Station is a film about the last day of Oscar Grant III’s life in Oakland California before he was fatally shot by BART officer Johannes Mehserle on January 1, 2009. Mehserle was responding to a report of a fight on the train and ended-up detaining Grant on the subway platform. Several onlookers recorded cellphone footage of the incident that landed Mehserle an involuntary manslaughter conviction and a 2-year sentence of which he served one year in the Los Angeles County Jail. This film is the feature debut for Ryan Coogler, Forest Whitaker is one of the producers and Octavia Spencer plays Grant’s mother. The film won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. Dramatic film at this year’s Sundance Awards. The movie is scheduled to be in theaters on July 13, 2013.
