International Jazz Day Is Tomorrow

April 30th is International Jazz Day and various cultural workers, artists, educational institutions and fans will observe it with concerts, workshops, film-viewings and exhibitions. The Jazzday website will stream the Sunset and Sunrise concerts tomorrow live from their New Orleans and New York City locations. Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan, Ellis Marsalis, Dianne Reeves, Ron Carter, Christian McBride and Quincy Jones are some of the artists scheduled to appear in the performances. The morning show in New Orleans starts at 8AM EST and the New York event begins at 7:30PM EST. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared April 30th International Jazz Day at their general conference in November of last year. The launch concert took place at the organization’s Paris headquarters on Friday. Herbie Hancock is their Goodwill Ambassador and he is of course a great face to add to the masthead. We should all observe International Jazz Day but would these kinds of events be necessary if jazz was alive in the industry?
