R.I.P. Sidney Lumet

The great film director Sidney Lumet has passed. Lumet was responsible for such classics as “Network,” “Serpico,” “The Pawnbroker” “Dog Day Afternoon, “Murder On The Orient Express” and “12 Angry Men.” But most people don’t know that he is the director of “The Wiz.” Berry Gordy wasn’t happy about the movie’s failure at the box office and the critics attacked Diana Ross for being too old to play Dorothy and for having subpar acting. But among Black and Black music-loving communities “The Wiz” is a cult classic in addition to being the only film that Michael Jackson ever made. Quincy Jones’ soundtrack to “The Wiz” is legendary. So hats off to Mr. Lumet for all the great work he did and for directing the biggest Black musical to hit Hollywood up till that point.

Media Questions Of The Week

1. Isn’t it interesting how Mister Cee is being defended for his public indiscretion when anyone else would have been derided? And doesn’t this kind of response lend credence to the theory that a homosexual elite is running the upper echelons of commercial hip-hop?

2. Will M. Night Shyamalan make a good movie with Will and Jaden Smith?

3. Isn’t it ridiculous that the FBI has known about the same information that that retired LAPD cop Russell Poole figured out 15 years ago but still has not solved the Biggie Smalls murder?

4. Now that The Grammys have slashed their categories thereby giving urban artists less chances to win, will these artists finally realize that they have more to worry about than a Grammy?
