Sarah Baartmann was an African slave woman lured into working as a freakshow attraction by the brother of her master during the 17th and 18th century. She was paraded around naked as the Hottentot Venus and gawked at because of her prominent backside. She died at age 25 in 1815 and her genitals, brain and skeleton were put on display in the Paris’ Musée de l’Homme until 1974. A mold of her remains was shown for two more years and in 2002 Nelson Mandela was able to have her finally sent home to South Africa and buried. Tunisian director Abdellatif Kechiche directed the film about this repugnant moment in history that was shown at the Venice International Film festival and nominated for the Golden Lion award. So far there are only plans for the film to be shown at the New York Film Festival next month.

MP3: Rah Digga – Classic Album Sampler Mixed by DJ King Most + Album Release

The wait is finally over. Today marks the release of Rah Digga’s much anticipated sophomore album, Classic. The Nottz-produced LP has spawned the fan favorite single “This Ain’t No Lil’ Kid Rap,” as well as a remix featuring fellow Brick City rhymer Redman, in addition to last week’s release of “Straight Spittin’ IV,” the latest edition of a series running back to Digga’s earliest appearances with Flipmode. Fans who purchase the album through iTunes will receive the iTunes exclusive bonus track “Look What You Done Started,” while fans that purchase the album via AmazonMP3 will receive the Amazon exclusive bonus track “Smoking My Life Away.”

For those who still seem to find the wait unbearable, Bay area stand out DJ King Most has lent his services to even further whet the appetite of her fans – and also give any holdouts a chance to check out a handful of tracks from the album – with this new album sampler. This is not Most’s first foray in the world of album samplers – he’s previously worked Detroit rapper and label mate of Digga’s on Raw Koncept Media Group, Finale – and his experience shows throughout with smooth transitions and timely cut-ups. While his touch is prominent on the mix the ferocity of Digga’s style still reigns supreme.

Rah Digga’s sophomore album, Classic, is now available via Raw Koncept Media Group.

Brooklyn Soul Singer Candice Anitra Releases Debut LP Bark Then Bite & S.O.B’s Show 9/15

(New York, New York – September 14, 2010) – Candice Anitra has been bearing witness to alchemy at work. Bark then Bite is the product of progressive chemistry coming together: 15 days at Studio G in Brooklyn with magical producer|engineer|artist Joel Hamilton, the same month he was wrapping Billboard’s #1 Top Heatseeker’s album Blakroc; Dub Trio’s return from Matisyahu’s tour to lay the musical foundations of the album with past credits including 50 Cent, Mos Def, Common, The Fugees and Tupac Shakur; Marika Hughes’s rolling through with her cello one Saturday morning after playing for Whitney Houston’s release; Soulive’s Neal Evans’s recording his organ in a hotel room overseas; and lastly, Scotty Hard’s remixing of “Objectify” with cameos by influential jazz artists Steven Bernstein, Kenny Wolleson and Michael Blake – a confluence of fortuitous forces for her debut LP released nationally on September 14th, 2010.
