Karyn White is from Los Angeles, California and was born to a trumpet-playing father and a mother who was a choir director. White sang in church, local talent shows and in the studio as a session vocalist. She worked with a local band Legacy and toured with O’Bryan in 1984. Her break came when she sang lead on Jeff Lorber’s “Facts Of Love” in 1986. This song helped her land a deal with Warner Brothers and they released her self-titled debut album in 1988. Thanks to the production talents of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis the album produced four hits with “The Way You Love Me,” “Secret Rendezvous,” “Superwoman” and “Love Saw It” a duet with Babyface. Her second album Ritual Of Love was also produced by Jam and Lewis. “The Way I Feel About You,” “Romantic,” “Walkin’ The Dog” and “Do Unto Me” were the significant singles from this second project. By 1992 White and Lewis were married and they had a daughter named Ashley. Make Him Do Right would be her last album for Warners and it saw a release date of 1994. “Hungah,” “Can I Stay With You” and “I’d Rather Be Alone” were her last hit songs and after this project she dropped out of the music industry. The marriage did not last between her and Lewis and both of them are married to other people today. White was scheduled to release an album titled Sista Sista in 2006 but it was shelved and two of the tracks “All I Do” and “Disconnected” were added to the 2007 compilation Superwoman: The Best Of Karyn White. These days the California native runs a successful interior design and real estate business.
